If you are going to do the pump your self then first thing you want to do is go to a fuel rebuild shop and get you a 1" gear pump and replace the maybe 5/8 gear pump that is on it now.As for as fuel pressure you can not say a 25 or 17 or what ever button is what you need untill you check the rail pressure with a snap gauge. The 1" gear pump will let you built enough pressure now to do what you want to.Even if you go with the over flowed injector you need a larger gear pump for the volumn with a inlet line to the front head and rear head also. There is many things you can do to get more hp but the engine will not live if it is going to be worked as a work truck.you are going to get a lot of different opinions on here and you will be trying to sort thru them and deside whats best good luck on your engine. Leased to Landstar Ranger, 1980 W900 3408, stepdeck. It smoked all the time but it did a good job back then. I think it had a #12 button and the timing was advanced and it had a HP turbo. I drove a 74 small cam back in 85 that was hot. I got a new(rebuilt) pump as of yesterday but have not driven the truck yet so hopefully my temps are more reasonable now. You will probly be ok if it's just a 1/4 mile or so though.

It jumps up to 1100 on any grade, dropping a gear only increases the temp. My 280 runs hot! Just cruising I run about 800F on my Pyro. Adding shims to shim this spring raises the max rpm. I had a #57 and dropped it to a #37.īehind the circlip is a spring about 1 inch around. The smaller the number on the button the more fuel pressure you will have. The button will probly still be inside the pump. Remove the circlip and pull the plunger out (its spring loaded so be ready to catch parts). You remove the bell shaped thing on the lower rear of the pump. Here's what little I know about the fuel pump. '87 Autocar ATF64B 3406B Cat "cranked up" 8LL overdrive 4:11's on Hendrickson Restored by my father and I. How much power is to be had by updating the exhaust manifold to the "pulse" style? I've noticed that there are a lot of cummins guys and a lot of old mechanics that probably know these motors inside and out. Now I know that since this is a small cam I need to keep the fuel pressure down so I don't put too much of a load on the cam and break it.

We are going to install a fuel pressure guage to keep an eye on that as well. Is there a better way to adjust the injectors to get a little more power? We have a good working pyro on the truck so we can keep an eye on the exhaust temp. Oh by the way, the fuel pump is the old style PTG Non AFC pump with the two screws pointing down, no in behind the little tin anti-tamper plate like on the Big cams. I know there is power to be made in the fuel pump but don't know which buttons, springs and whatever else it takes to turn one up.

I know how to adjust the engine base timing with the cam boxes but don't know how much to advance/retard to make most power. If this means replacing injectors with bigger ones I can do that I just want to know what combinations have worked for others. This truck is not going to be worked, never haul anything just bob tail around and hot rod it. I've played around with old NTC's but have never been inside the fuel pump.

I'm a mechanic by profession, I rebuild motors, transmissions rear ends basically everything that has to do with a truck, but I'm young, 24 and I only really famillar with M-11's N-14's 60 series detroits C-15 cats new age stuff. We are building it for a fun truck and also to drag race it at the local truck drag event. Here's the story, my father is restoring/modifying his 75 Autocar.
